Art in South Orange and Maplewood

The two towns of Maplewood and South Orange are home to a large and diverse group of artists, artist groups, galleries and performing art venues. The most recent addition is SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center), which opened this year. It houses a 5 screen movie theater, and a 300 (?) seat stage theater which has had jazz musicians, comedians and other performances from national and international artists.

In Maplewood, the Burgdorff Center for the Arts regularly hosts local theatrical productions, as does the Baird in South Orange. The Pierro Gallery at the Baird is the only town-funded gallery in the state. It hosts a sophisticated lineup of group and individual exhibits which are often reviewed in the NYT. In addition, there are adult art classes and workshops year-round.

A wonderful show opened at The Pierro Gallery on Sept. 9th. The 5th Essex Exposed show demonstrates the vibrancy of our artistic community. The Gallery is open weekends from 1-4pm and by appointment.
